I got civil in pec round 1 so what are the chances of getting upper branch in pec in further round?

Hello. I am a PEC B.E Mechanical graduate 2012–16. I'd joined as a civil engineer then. I had taken a very huge risk that time as I had no where else to join with AIR 13126 and brand better than PEC. So I just decided to enter into PEC somehow and then upgrade into mechanical after my first year.

But things were not that easy.

In my time, the criteria was that the students with CGPA>9 were eligible to fill the branch change forms. And trust me , at the end of first year there were many students who had applied. So my point is , branch changing activity is very competitive. Moreover, there should be vacant seats in the branch in which you want to upgrade. I was a bit lucky in this thing and I tell you how.

The things I kept doing in my first year were:

1. Ensured I never got a B in any subject ever.(Had to study a lot , you can imagine.)

2. Keeping a track of my competitors (who's getting how much CGPA and wants which branch? )

3. Didn't join any club (so that I don't waste my time)

4. Keeping myself abreast of the no. of vacant seats in every branch and anticipating the branch shifting scenarios of my competitors.

5. In this way , under constant pressure for the whole year I managed to secure 9.89 CGPA at the end of the year. (Topped the civil branch along with 3 competitors who secured the same CGPA)

Now the problem is : If two people has the same grade point, one with a better AIEEE rank will be given preference.

Now considering my competitors, I stood 3rd in rankings (for the branch changing).

Another problem : Both of them (who were ahead of me) also wanted mechanical. And as per my information gathered that time , there were two vacant seats in mechanical.

So what did I do?

I looked for people who were preparing for IIT JEE and had secured great ranks. Luckily , two of the students were from Mechanical itself who were leaving the college. Hence two more seats.

Now the college considers these seats vacant only when those students fill a NOC form stating that the seats are vacant and can be filled.

So I just kept myself in touch with both of those IIT students and made them to leave their seats in time.

Now what ?

I entered into MECHANICAL ! That year saw the greatest number of mechanical branch upgraders for the first time.

I hope , you get a fair idea how easy or tough it is to upgrade your branch after the first year. It's a combination of your hard work, competitiveness , willpower & of course LUCK !
