Both the fields have great scope ahead in future and you should choose what you find more interesting and perhaps wish to work in that particular domain, as for the year gap, see you have been out of studies for a time now, so you have to prepare yourself mentally and emotionally to restart your academic career, the barriers are more so in the mind to be honestly speaking, people go through their period of struggles, nobody is an exception in this case, but if you're determined and focused you will do wonders, so have a positive attitude and continue your journey ahead with perseverance.
