This statement is known as the Basic Proportionality Theorem (BPT), or Thales' Theorem, in geometry.

In triangle $A B C$ , if a line $D E$ is drawn parallel to side $B C$ such that:

D lies on AB
E lies on AC
$D E B C$

then,

$\frac{A D}{D B} = \frac{A E}{E C}$
