Human Resource Management is basically divided into 2 categories. Employee Relations (ER) and Industrial Relations (IR).

ER is basically a corporate role where you perform various activities like

• Talent acquisition, where you recruit people
• Sales HR
• Performance Management where you evaluate employees performance
• Centre for Excellence where you deal with various technical aspects of HR and involves the information management of employees and some other strategic roles

IR will involve tasks like

• Dealing with labour unions
• Working towards various labour welfare activities and CSR
• Taking care of compliances etc

Companies while recruiting HR managers generally offers one of these two roles. IR is offered in manufacturing industries where ER is offered in all kinds of industries, be it a manufacturing setup or a service industry.
