A national level examination, GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is a qualifying exam for admissions to post-graduate programs (e.g., M.E., M.Tech, direct Ph.D.) in Indian institutes of higher education with financial assistance provided by MHRD and other Government agencies. GATE scores may also be used by Public and Private Sector.
The exam tests the comprehensive understanding of candidate in various undergraduate subjects including Engineering/Technology/Architecture and post-graduate level subjects in Science.
The exam, which is conducted online, encompasses 23 papers. The exam papers will have questions for which numerical answers must be keyed in by the candidate using the virtual keypad. However, the rest of the questions are of Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) type.
Eligibility Criteria,
Aspirants need to choose the GATE paper - out of the 23 papers - they wish to appear for. Please note that a candidate is allowed to appear in ONLY ONE paper.

Candidates from Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka and United Arab Emirates must have completed or should be in the final year of their Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology or Post-graduate (MSc) degree in any relevant science subject.

The candidate will have to satisfy at least one of the following two criteria for admission to IITs: Should have scored at least 75% aggregate marks in 10+2 th standard (or equivalent) board examination. For SC/ ST and PwD candidates, the aggregate marks should be at least 65% .
