I'm recently finished my UG on engineering. I want know about Master of management studies (MMS). How can I join.?
Dear Santosh,
Master of Management Studies (MMS) and Masters in Management (MiM) are both postgraduate management degrees, just like MBA. In India, it is offered as a two-year program in the semester mode. In Europe and US it’s a one-year program.
To gain admission in India, for example, in Maharashtra, you need to crack Maharashtra Common Entrance Test or other national-level exams like CAT, CMAT or MAT.
One advantage of doing MMS/MiM from abroad is that you can pursue it directly after you basic degree. Only top B-Schools in the West where competition is very stiff insist on GMAT scores. So you start learning management at a comparatively lesser age than a regular MBA at a top B-School. You don’t require work experience to gain admission in good B-School for MiM.
A major difference is in the curriculum. MBA is a practice-oriented professional management degree while MMS and MiS have more focus on technical and theory-oriented subjects, though you will get practical training as part of the course. In India, you learn general management principles in the first year and then go for specializations like Finance or Marketing in the second year.
The last difference is in the course fee. Doing MiM/MMS is comparatively cheaper than an MBA, especially abroad. So, if your interest is to accelerate your management career, MMS/MiM is a good option. Hope this answers your basic doubts. Best of luck!
