Thanks for your question. Given how tough NEET is, taking a gap year is a very common occurrence among candidates. And as such, a number of NEET aspirants end up facing this conundrum each year, as to whether a gap year certificate is required or not. I hope the answer below clears your doubts.

From all the available information, NEET candidates are NOT REQUIRED to submit gap year certificates, neither at the time of All India Quota (AIQ) counselling or State Quota counselling. So you needn’t worry about procuring one, as long as all the other documents you possess with regard to domicile, applicable reservations and Class XII marks are in order.

At the time of filling the NEET application form, students are required to submit their Class XII marks as it is a major eligibility criteria for the exam. Along with this, they are also required to enter the year in which they completed their Class XII as well as the Board they completed it from. This information is enough for the counselling authorities to determine whether a candidate has taken a gap year or not.

However, unlike in the case of B-Schools and other institutions which wish to know why candidates have taken a gap year, there is no such provision of interviews in NEET except in the case of Armed Forces Medical College, Pune which conducts its own counselling. Therefore, whether a candidate has taken a gap year or not is a mere formality, one which colleges cannot test for as they are only required to admit students on the basis of their NEET scores. You should also note that as taking a gap year is such a common occurrence, medical colleges are not concerned about when a candidate completed Class XII as long as they completed it with the required minimum marks.

Also, a perusal of the documents required to be submitted for All India Quota counselling or in the case of State Quota counselling across multiple states reveals that submitting a gap certificate is NOT REQUIRED .
