Yes Improvement exam result are counted in JEE Mains . But condition is that you will have to appear in all 5 subjects. and Once you appear and then that year JEE will consider your Impovemnt marks.
There is no such rule that you can appear in any of the subject you want. You will have to appear in all 5 Subject. that is ; P/C/M + one language paper(English) + One optional subject.

Improvement marks are valid for taking admission in any college through JEE MAINS/ADVANCED. You will have to get a gap certificate an submit it with the improvement marksheet's xerox copy in your college. You will get gao certificate format from college and you will get it signed and prepared at any judicial court.
