is killing someones expectations for our interest (in case of education) is wrong?
Trying to live upto other's expectations and striving to fulfil other's dreams and sacrifice your own expectations and your own dreams is just like killing your own soul. This is a common phenomenon in India where children and parents have huge difference of opinions in the matters of expectations, dreams and career choices. There is generation gap. While your parents come with experience, you bring interest and passion to the table. But at the end of the day, it is you who has to live with the decision made and choices taken. Sorry for sounding insensitive, but after 50 years from now, it is you who has to live with the choices you make now while those who had expectations on you would have departed from this Earth. In such case, you should not live a life with regrets. You would not be happy if you live life according to someone else's expectations and life choices for you. You need to be able to make decisions and then be able to stand up to the repercussions of those choices and decisions. Few months back, I conducted a survey for a Academy I was working as a Sports Psychologist. We had a questionnaire asking Parents "What they wanted their children to become" and Children "what they want to become". Out of 100 parents and children combinations, only 10 parents and children had the same aspirations for the child's future. So 90% of the times, there is a difference of opinion and someone is bound to have their expectations killed. Either the child or parent is bound to make a difficult choice. Now if someone were to tell me to become something that am not tuned or wired to become, I would stand up for myself because I as a person know my capabilities and strengths. Sometimes, I might need someone to point out more strengths and attributes that make me a better person but because I live my life every day, I know myself better. And if I am poor in Commerce, there is no way that I would pursue a career in that stream because that will not help me progress. Now let's say your parents want you to become a Doctor and you want to become a Commercial pilot. First write down your Strengths and Weaknesses. Also write down the attributes that one needs to become a Doctor or a Commercial Pilot. Write down the characteristics in you that you think you have to become a Doctor or a Commercial Pilot. And what you also need to do is take a Career Aptitude Test. There are many free career Aptitude tests available online and you can take any one of them. And based on the results, see which one are you more closer to. Either a Doctor or a Commercial Pilot. And however dramatic or cinematic it might sound, sit with your parents with your research and findings and bear it all. You talking with the help of numbers and facts and let them understand your passions and expectations that you have of your life. A heart to heart talk and making them understand what you are expecting out of your life is much better than what they expect out of your life is far better than suffering in silence for the rest of your life. That way you are not killing any one's expectations too. You are setting the reality and priorities right. Good luck:)
Yes killing someones expectations for our interest in any case is a very wrong idea. Never ever do that unless you have no other thing to do.
If you are very determined to do what you desire to do and you are sure if you will excel in that field then you can kill others expectations .
Hope you are clear.
