Both paper 1 and paper 2 of JEE advanced are compulsory if you want to take admission in any of the IIT, if you don't give any of the paper, either paper 1 or paper 2 then you will not be eligible to get admission in IIT, so if you want to puruse btech from any of the IIT then you need to attempt both the papers of JEE advanced.

JEE Advanced consists of 2 papers ( Paper 1 and Paper 2 ) and candidates have to appear for both the papers . The question paper consists of three parts: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. There are MCQs and numerical answer type questions which candidates have to attempt.
Both the paper is compulsory for b.tech and for b arch as well
