The State government has decided to implement 10% reservation for students hailing from economically weaker sections (EWS) for admission into government medical and dental colleges from this academic year.

The reservation would be implemented from the specially sanctioned seats which are exclusively permitted by the Medical and Dental Councils of India and the Central government. According to the orders issued on Friday, horizontal reservations would be calculated of the total number of seats available in the EWS category for each course as per the percentage allotted to each category.

Special Chief Secretary A. Santhi Kumari said in the orders that necessary amendments had been made to the Telangana Medical and Dental Colleges Admission (admission into MBBS & BDS courses) Rules 2017 had been made for implementation of the EWS reservation. Accordingly, a sub-rule specifying the 10% reservation for the EWS candidates (who are not covered under the existing scheme of reservations for SCs, STs, and Socially and Educationally backward classes) had been incorporated in the rules.

Candidates claiming admission under the EWS category should submit the Income and Asset certificate for reservation issued by the competent authority of the State government in original to the verifying authority at the time of verification of certificates as per the schedule notified by the university.

Otherwise, their claims for reservation under the EWS category would not be considered and the decision of the verifying officer would be final
