Having gone through your query, there is no disadvantage on putting any college on your first list. Suppose you put a college X as your first preference, but you want only specific branch in that college so put only those branches as your preference in College X, if a branch doesn't matter put all branches of X in the first preference list. What happens in counselling is according to the rank obtained in exam and number of seats available, colleges/branch available is allotted to you. So think you got 173 ranks, And you put College X as your first preference, if 173 seats are available at that college you will get that college else you will get the college which is second in your preference list.
