Suppose, I have accepted my seat in NIT in round 1, now i got an offer from an IIT in subsequent rounds. Can i stay back in NIT and not IIT?

This seems to be the question on the minds of every youth aspiring to be an engineer. If a fact-based comparison had to be made, then IIT is no doubt the better college. However, there is a lot more to consider.

Fees and Admission: Admissions into IIT is through JEE Advanced rank whereas one can get into NIT through JEE Mains alone. Comparatively speaking, NIT fees is cheaper than that of IITs.

Education: After speaking to many IITians and NITians, I can say without a doubt that the quality of education is more or less similar in both the colleges. They have similar difficulty syllabus, assignments and professors keep the students engaged with mind-boggling and challenging questions.

Placements: There is a bare minimum and almost negligible difference in the companies that come to IIT and NIT for recruitments, both IIT and NIT students earn high packages, however in some rare cases, the IITian might earn a higher package due to the IIT tag that has been placed on him/her.

Student Life: It is true for a fact that students of IIT and NIT are more or less equally talented. NIT consists of many students who were IIT aspirants but couldn’t get their preferred stream by a few ranks. This doesn’t mean they weren’t good enough, it was just a matter of bad circumstances, therefore student exposure is equal in both the colleges.

Research: The funding for IITs is higher for research papers and projects and this is the reason why IITs have a higher research contribution than NITs. Even NIT publishes numerous research papers but they are lesser than IITs. Hence the h-index of IITs is greater.

Overall speaking, both NIT and IIT are great for pursuing an education. I would also recommend to not blindly believe rankings as they do not contain the entire truth about these institutions. Also, try to consult with people studying there or people who have graduated from there to receive a better understanding.
