See the entire engineering involves proper participation and involvement in work. It depends on the branch which you are in. Initially in the first year , you need to work on the basics to understand how engineering truly is , the labs n all.
Second year is fine.
In the third year , you'll have your core subjects and you'll develop your professional skills, so u need to work there.
In the final year you need various coaching for interviews , cat, gate etc
