How many marks are good in NEET depends upon your target college. If you are aiming at a reputed Government Medical College, come from General Category, probably for NEET 2018, I must say you need to target 650+ marks.
If you are eligible for a quota benefit or are willing to shell out hefty fees to the private medical colleges, you can probably manage with even 300–350 marks.
But, in my opinion, even if you are eligible for a quota or your parents have real deep pockets, you should target 650+ marks. Setting a higher goal always helps you because you work accordingly. Even if your result is short of your expectations or target, you can still probably get marks decent enough to get into a government medical college or a private medical college.
BUT the bigger and most important question is how to get those decent enough marks in NEET. You have counselors here on Quora and in the real world around you, advising you to work harder, work smarter, focus and what not. All these tips are more generic in nature and do not give you any direction or concrete path. You are left in the dark, groping for a way out to reach that target of 650+ score.
I also faced the same difficulty while I prepared for the erstwhile AIPMT (Now NEET). My first attempt was a complete disaster with a paltry 126 in AIPMT 2014. I followed the advice of everyone, my coaching institute and what not but miserably failed again to crack AIPMT in 2015. I was not able to identify my problem. I used to be a school topper, scored 96% in PCB in the School Boards. Repeatedly revised the NCERT books, brushed up topics and took the test series of the top coaching institutes. I don’t wish to name the coaching institutes, lest these coaching institutes mind it but I know that you all are aware which institutes I am talking about.
I never believed in good or bad fortunes. But to be fortunate enough, I bumped into a website which talked about smart preparations for NEET. I thought it would be yet another video course website or offering test series but the headlines on the webpage were truly appealing – Crack NEET with 650+ marks. I could not resist the temptation and I must say it was truly fruitful. I realised that despite having read NCERT books couple of times and having attended coaching for all these years, I was still unable to solve even 50% of the questions which the website had given in free trial. Now, the reality dawned upon me. I had all the knowledge of chemistry, Physics and Biology but when it came to applying that knowledge, I seriously lacked the application abilities.
