Most of the private college take admission through JEE main .
But VIT take admission through VITEEE for Chennai campus . For taking admission in VIT you don't necessarily sit for Jee main.
Some colleges also take admission through their own entrance exam such as VITEEE ,SRM JEE, AMITY JEE,etc.
But these institutions also have some seats through Jee . You can search about number of seats through Jee on their official website.
You can take in state or out state admission on the basis of Jee main score.

VIT is an independent institute.To get admission in VIT you will have to appear the examination conducted by VIT itself.You cannot get admission in VIT from your JEE Mains marks.

For admission in VIT chennai campus you need not to appear for jee mains. But you need good rank in VITEEE. A rank under 10000 in VITEEE will definitely get you a seat in chennai campus.
