*Fees are indicative and can differ substantially by programme, category and institution.

    1. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

AI and machine learning courses focus on programming, statistics, data analysis and intelligent systems. Students can pursue BTech, BSc or related programmes depending on the institute. Careers include AI engineer, machine learning engineer and AI developer.

The fee range is wide because both government and private institutions offer AI specialisations. The undergraduate AI and ML course fees at government colleges is generally lower than the private colleges.

    2. Semiconductor and VLSI Technology

India is putting serious money into making its own chips, and that means a growing need for people who can design and build them. If you like electronics, this Semiconductor and VLSI technology course is worth a look. You can get in through electronics or electrical engineering, or go for a dedicated VLSI or semiconductor programme.

Jobs in this space include chip design, verification and semiconductor process engineering. VLSI courses are offered at NIT Warangal, IIT Ropar, NIT Calicut, DTU and IIT Jodhpur. IIT Madras has also started an M.Tech in Semiconductor Materials Technology, which covers chip fabrication, materials and nanomanufacturing. It's a sign that specialised courses in this field are only going to increase.

    3. Robotics and Automation

Robotics pulls together mechanical engineering, electronics, coding, control systems and AI. So if you enjoy building things and making them smart, it's a good fit. Graduates go on to industrial automation, robot development and autonomous systems.

Best colleges for Robotics and Automation courses include IIT Delhi, IIT Jodhpur and IIIT Allahabad. Government programmes start at around Rs.64,000 and go up to several lakh rupees, while private colleges can charge a lot more. Compare fees before you shortlist.

    4. Cybersecurity

Banking, healthcare, government services: almost everything now runs online, and all of it needs protecting. You can study cybersecurity as a full degree or take it as a specialisation within CSE.

In 2026, IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur launched a four-year Bachelor of Cybersecurity. Careers open to graduates include cyber defence, penetration testing, digital forensics, cloud security and hardware security.

    5. Data Science and Analytics

Every bank, app and online store is sitting on a huge pile of data, and it's worth very little until someone figures out what it says. That's what data scientists do. You'll learn maths, statistics, coding and machine learning, then use them to turn raw numbers into decisions a business can act on, like what customers might buy next or where money is being lost. Some of the best colleges for data science and analytics related courses include DTU, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Mandi and NIT Surathkal

    6. Quantum Computing

Quantum computing is still an emerging field, but specialised undergraduate programmes are beginning to appear in India. Programmes may combine computer science, mathematics, physics, quantum algorithms and programming.

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham offers BTech CSE with a Quantum Computing specialisation, with annual tuition ranging from Rs.1.5 lakh to Rs.6 lakh depending on the fee slab. The NorthCap University also offers a BTech programme in Quantum AI; its 2026–27 annual fee is Rs.3.275 lakh for Indian students.

    7. Electric Vehicle Technology

Electric vehicles are changing how cars are built, and someone has to design the batteries, motors and power systems behind them. EV courses cover electric powertrains, batteries, motors, power electronics and vehicle systems. If you love automobiles and also like electrical engineering, then the Electric Vehicle Technology course is the right career option for you.

MIT School of Engineering Pune offers a four-year BTech in Electric Vehicle, with total fees of ₹8.95 lakh. DIT University offers a BTech in Electrical Engineering with an EV specialisation. JAIN University and Sharda University also have EV-focused programmes.

    8. Renewable Energy Engineering

Renewable energy programmes cover solar, wind, energy systems, power engineering and sustainability. Students can pursue specialised programmes or enter the field through electrical, mechanical or related engineering degrees.

IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, IIEST Shibpur and NIT Kurukshetra are among institutes offering renewable-energy-related programmes. Current Careers360 listings include M.Tech and BTech options with fees varying considerably by institute.

    9. Biotechnology and Bioinformatics

Biotechnology is biology mixed with technology and engineering. Bioinformatics adds computing and data analysis on top. If you like life sciences but don't want to spend all day in a lab, then biotechnology related courses and bioinformatics courses is worth a look. IIT Madras offers a BTech in Biological Engineering. It covers bioprocess engineering, biomedical engineering and computational biology. Some of the popular colleges for biotechnology and bioinformatics courses include IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur, VIT and NIT Rourkela.

    10. Embedded Systems and Internet of Things

You probably use IoT every day without noticing, in a smartwatch, a security camera or a smart thermostat. It simply means physical devices, sensors, software and networks working together. Embedded systems are the hardware and software inside those devices that make them run. Embedded systems deal with the hardware and software that sit inside electronic products and make them run. Some of the best colleges for embedded systems and IoT courses include NIT Kurukshetra, COEP Pune and NSUT Delhi.

How Should Students Choose an Emerging Course?

An emerging course should not be selected only because it sounds new or has a technology-related name. Students should compare:

    • Eligibility and entrance exams

    • Total tuition and hostel fees

    • Curriculum and laboratory facilities

    • Internship and industry exposure

    • Placement record

    • Higher-study opportunities

    • Long-term relevance of the skills taught

Students should also check whether the specialised degree is actually necessary. Many students do just as well starting with CSE, ECE, Electrical Engineering or Biotechnology and choosing a specialisation later. By then you'll know better what you enjoy, and if your interests change, you can switch direction without starting over.
