Is a 1-Year Online Bachelor's Degree Actually Valid in India? Here's What UGC Says

Many students want to complete their graduation in a shorter time. Some may have left college in the middle of the session, while others want to continue their studies after a break. This raises a common question among students: Can I complete an online bachelor's degree in just one year in India? Well, under the Accelerated Degree Programme (ADP), eligible students may complete their degree in fewer semesters. However, this does not mean they can finish a full bachelor's degree in one year.

Before choosing such a course, students should check the UGC rules and make sure they meet the required conditions of the university and course. This is important because a course advertised as a one-year online graduation may not be the same as a recognised bachelor's degree.

What Does UGC Say About a One-Year Bachelor's Degree?

According to UGC's 2025 regulations, a bachelor's degree usually takes three or four years to complete. However, eligible students can finish their degree in a shorter time through the Accelerated Degree Programme (ADP). This option allows students to complete their studies in a short period of time.

Under this option, students can complete a three-year degree in five semesters instead of six. A four-year degree can be completed in six or seven semesters instead of eight. For this, students must meet the required credit criteria, and the university must follow UGC rules to offer this option.

Note: ADP is an option for completing a degree in fewer semesters; it does not automatically mean that the degree is available online. Students should check the university's official guidelines to confirm the mode of study and duration of their chosen programme.

Universities Offering the Accelerated Degree Programme (ADP)

Few universities have included the Accelerated Degree Programme (ADP) in their undergraduate academic framework. Doon University in Dehradun and the University of Kashmir are two of them. The availability of ADP may differ by university and course.

What Should Students Check Before Applying for ADP?

Before applying for an Accelerated Degree Programme, students should check the following details:

    • Eligibility criteria: Check whether you meet the university's requirements for ADP.

    • Course duration: You should confirm how many semesters the degree will take to complete.

    • Credit requirements: Check the credits you need to earn to complete the programme.

    • Admission process: Read the official admission guidelines and check whether ADP is available for your selected course.

    • UGC recognition: If you want to study online, check whether the university is recognised to offer that specific course in online mode for the relevant academic session.

In conclusion, students who want to complete their bachelor's degree in a shorter time can explore the Accelerated Degree Programme (ADP). However, ADP should not be treated as a route to completing a full bachelor's degree in one year. The programme allows eligible students to finish their degree in a shorter period, according to UGC rules.
