I am sorry to say but you score has very negligible scope for any NIT , you can try in home state quota buteven in your state there wil be many students who will be there competeting against you witha better rank. still you can try.

You have very decent chances of conversion at above IIITs like Jabalpur and Kanchipuram for Mechanical engineering.

The above colleges sees 27500 rank as closibg ranks on average and hence good chances predicted.

The companies offering placements in iiit jabalpur are(from 2013-2017) Info, TCS, Wipro, IBM, Capgemini, Oracle, Vassar Labs, Tata technology, Cannon India, Caviom Technologies, etc..,

lowest package (2013-2017) : 3.25 lakhs per annum

highest package(2013-2017) : 15 lakhs per annum

Average package(2013-2017) : 7-8 lakhs per annum.

State quota does matter a lot in getting selected to prestigious colleges. According to your son's rank NIT Trichy is most least likely option. But, he does have a slight chance for both the IIIT's as mentioned by you.

Hii,

There is no chance of getting NIT, Tiruchirapalli or IIIT,Kancheepuram. However you can excel in other exams like BITSAT, VITEEE AND JEE advanced e.t.c and can get better options.

It should be noted that IIIT Trichy is way better in terms of education offered and placements. I would recommend you to go for IIIT Trichy than Kancheepuram.

If you want to be in rank list, you must score more than 90, now talking about your rank 982, it would get a bit tough for you to get into IITdm jabalpur ( last year it was something around 300, I guess )
