Hi, I got Jee Advance 2025 rank 4964. Should I go for Chemical Engineering from IIT Guwahati or Mechanical Engineering from IIT Hyderabad?

Tanisha chaudhary 10th Jun, 2025

HEY THERE!!!

Both options - Chemical Engineering from IIT Guwahati and Mechanical Engineering from IIT Hyderabad are strong choices, but they differ in academic focus, campus culture, and placement outcomes.

IIT Guwahati Chemical Engineering:

  • This IIT has been around longer
  • Its graduates form a strong network leading to good job offers
  • Life on campus tends to be more settled

IIT Hyderabad Mechanical Engineering:

  • This IIT is newer but growing fast
  • It has a modern campus and teaches in new ways
  • Mechanical grads earn more on average (INR 18.7 LPA), but fewer get jobs (53.7%)

  1. Go for IIT Hyderabad Mechanical if you like machines and want a new-age campus.
  2. Pick IIT Guwahati Chemical if you want a time-tested IIT and enjoy studying chemicals.
  3. You can't go wrong with either; just think about what you want to study and where you'd like to live!

Hi! I want to ask that I scored less than 75 percent in 12th boards in AMU and I will give improvement next year in June. So will I be eligible for Jee Advanced for next year? And what will I have to write in my percentage section in jee mains form "Awaited" or my "current percentage"?

Abhishek 24th Jul, 2024

Hi folk,

Hope you are doing great.

Yes you can obviously give the jee advanced next year after giving the improvement this  year and then scoring above the required percentage necessary to take part in the examination.

Giving an improvement exam will help you in preparing for the jee examination as well and also make you prepared for the entrance test so that you can perform well and achieve a good rank in it.

You can further know more about the rules and the regulations regarding the exam and the counselling and then have a good idea of how to prepare for the examination.

Hope this resolves all your query.

I have got water resources Engineering at IIT Guwahati in round 5 of COAP and i accepted and freeze it . I would like to upgrade to geotechnical engineering. What should I do?Is there any internal upgradation process in iit guwahati after all coap round

Nitin Kumar 15th Jun, 2024

There isn't a formal internal upgrade process at IIT Guwahati after all COAP rounds for changing branches.

COAP (Committee on Applied Sciences Programs) is a centralized allotment system ensuring transparency and fairness. Once you have accepted and frozen your seat, it's unlikely to be reopened for internal upgradation.

IIT Guwahati has a specific number of seats allocated for each program. Upgrading you to Geotechnical Engineering might take away a seat from someone who might have preferred it during COAP.

Contact the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Guwahati. Explain your situation and inquire if there's any exceptional circumstance where an internal transfer might be possible (highly unlikely but worth a try).

While you can't switch branches now, keep these options in mind for the future After completing your B.Tech in Water Resources Engineering, you can pursue an M.Tech in Geotechnical Engineering at IIT Guwahati or other institutes. This would allow you to specialize in Geotechnical Engineering.

I am an OBC candidate. What would be the minimum CRL rank for CSE in IIT GUWAHATI and IIT HYDERABAD in jee advanced?

Aditi Singh 23rd Jul, 2022

hello student!

As the JEE ADVANCED 2022 is not yet held and hence no rank list has been released by the NTA. so, we can just predict the cutoff based on previous year rank cutoff pattern. Since you are an OBC Candidate, you calim some reservation to get admission in IITs and NITs accordingly.

Cutoff rank for OBC for male candidates

  • IIT GUWAHATI : CSE : ~282
  • IIT HYDERABAD: CSE: ~253
