if I am complete the neet and mbbs then can I go USA for MD and MCH

priyaankasarkar Student Expert 17th Aug, 2020
The process of studying medicine in India and in US for that matter in any country are different. NEET is entrance examination for admission to MBBS, BDS, Ayush and veterinary courses across India. Should you qualify in NEET should you qualify in NEET and secure a seat in Medicine you have to study to MBBS for the next 50 months and then complete a 1 year rotatational mandatory internship and then you officially become an MBBS doctor. But to study MD in the US, you need to appear for USMLE. USMLE is a three stage process to study MD in the United States. This is a licence examination and it has three steps called Step 1, Step 2 Step 3 and these three steps cover a certain portion of your MBBS course. Based on the point marks that you have scored in USMLE you will be given a certain stream to study your MD. You can take Step 1 from India but for steps 2 and 3 you need to study them in the United States.

What is the difference between MS and MD, Mch and DM? What should we take after MBBS? What is the salary of each course?

Sk Student Expert 20th Jun, 2020

Dear Student,

We find the question ambivalent as you seem to be unsure if you are really keen on taking up the ‘Medical Field’ as your field of interest/career choice. The first part of choosing your career would be to identify your primary area of interest and how to make that as a career choice.  Please remember, it is not the vocation (job) that ensures a successful career but your passion/dedication/continuous striving to learn attitude that defines success in any chosen field. One way to find your inclinations would be to take the Myers & Briggs Personality Test to access your strengths.

Having said that your short term goal if your field of interest is ‘Medicine’ is writing  National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) examination is your first step in moving to this goal.  Nearly 17 Lakhs student wrote this examination this year and your merit in this exam will determine if you get into a good college on merit or through a management quote. Hence fees can range from 2Lakhs to 50Lakhs.  After you MBBS, you will have to write the NEET PG for your MS/MD/DNB courses.

The Medical Council of India (MCI) offers DM/MCh and the National Board of Examinations offers DNB (super-specialty), both as super-specialty medical courses. The MD courses are available in three and two years for MBBS and post-diploma candidates, respectively. The duration of the DM is six, five or three years; six or five years for candidates with an MBBS, and three years for MD candidates.

MBBS – Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery

MS – Master of Surgery

MD – Doctor of Medicine

DM – Doctor of Medicine

DCH – Master of Surgery

Good Luck
