Kindly mention your stream with which you want pursue MTECH course.As for each stream separate examination held and cuttoff and rank for IIT MADRAS is different for each stream.. Generally for core stream you need rank under 500 for IIT MADRAS for such rank you need to score 70+
You can surely look up for the following options for MTech admission without gate:
IIIT Hyderabad PGEE-Test in April end, interview in June
IIIT Delhi- Test and interview in first week of June, after shortlisting on the basis of BTech percentage

First of all there are no disadvantages although it is advisable that you should not change your stream in MTech but that dosent affect anything. You can always go for coding there are no restrictions and if your skills are good companies like Google,Microsoft would accept you anyway.

Specializations for M.Tech CSE are Artificial Intelligence, Image Processing, Data Analytics and Security.
I would suggest you to go for Image Processing as it has a very great scope in future in comparison to others. Artifical Intelligence and Data Analytics are in scope for now a days
