If the seat that you secured was an EWS seat, then it is pretty natural that students infront of you in the ews seats did not abort their seats for iit seats. See all the seats are not ews seats only a few handful are and those seats gets filled up like ews seat of cs it extc are much more preferable to those 5756 students infront of you thus they did not change their seat or choose any nit below rourkela. 

Trust me rourkela is a great nit and a lot of students are applying for the higher demand subjects like extc that is why you weren't upgraded. If this was some other lesser ranked nit then you could have been upgraded.

You got a mess, which has edible food , breakfast is appreciable.

washing services are available.

You got lan port per room(from 5:30pm to 8am). All day on saturdays and sundays.

Final year students gets single room. The rest double. Rooms are smaller for double occupancy in some hostels like Homi-Bhabha.

there is a  night canteen open till 1am atleast.

Rourkela has a very dry climate, so be prepared to experience extreme heat waves during summers. 

Also, be careful while hanging clothes to dry in corridors. Mine got stolen a couple of time

canteen open from 9 to 7pm.

You can play volleyball or badminton in hostels.

the  DC++ for downloading stuff. It's the best thing of all. You will get almost everything.

There is  a garden and cycle stand to park your cycles. Two wheelers not allowed in the campus.

Average salary package differed branch wise but, on an average 6 Lacs package was offered to most students. Placements are expected to improve in future. Almost 95% students got placed. The highest salary was somewhat around 25-30 Lacs annually. The lowest salary was 3 Lacs annually. Your chances for upgradation via slide is quite difficult and there is a lot of difference between the opening and closing rank of both the branches but you have an another option for upgradation in 1st year based on your cg in the 1st year.
