I recently heard that after completing 2 years bds one can write lateral entry and get into mbbs if they wish. Is it true?

The students can join MBBS after BDS if they clear entrance exam of MBBS. The limit for MBBS is 25 yars if someone joims before that then they may. If you do so then you can't join directly in second year, you have to study from first year. Even if you quit halfway to pursue MBBS then you have to pay fees of BDS whole year.
