What happens when hydrated aluminium chloride is used in friedel craft reaction
Answer (1)
Hello
AlCl is salt of strong acid (HCl) and weak base i.e. AlCl. When it comes in contact with water two things can happen. Primarily hydrolysis of AlCl which may lead to the formation of HCl and Al(OH).
Secondly water acts as a ligand, hence it has ability to donate pair of electrons to AlCl ,which is a Lewis acid.
If AlCl is co-ordinated with water then it is less available to take Cl- from alkyl chlorides or acyl chlorides and initiation of electrophile may get affected.
Goodluck I hope this helps you
Thanku
