The f-block elements are called inner transition metals because their differentiating f-orbitals are inner to the d-orbitals ((n-2)f orbitals are filled before (n-1)d orbitals in some cases), and also they exhibit properties that are a transition within the transition metals themselves, being typically found within the d-block group 3.
