Hi! Im from NIT Kurukshetra. See I consider your notion but believe me I wont be bragging about NIT Kurukshetra. Lets look at the various aspects:
Firstly from branch point of view the syllabi of both CS and IT are nearly same. The only thing is IT deals more with the software and programming side, while in CS you have some hardware courses covered. So in the end both the branches are nearly same.
Secondly in the industry mainly in the end all you have to do is software related be it main programming, or maintenance or dbms management side. So companies generally evaluate your acumen for coding implying it doesnt matter you are from CS or IT or for the matter any other branch.
Thirdly regarding placements NIT Kurukshetra has a very good placement record with 100% placement for CS and IT. Also CS and IT students both are treated as equals. Hardly any company asks for only CS students. And they are offered good packages.
Now as per the location it is placed in the outskirts of the town, access from railway station or from bus stand is not a problem. Kurukshetra is a small town so you might not get to see city a lot of city life. But it is very near to Chandigarh
As for college life it is really good but it is nearly same everywhere. Its upto you how you shape it. BUT as per youll get many opportunities to showcase your talent in sports or any extra curricular activities.
There are various cultural clubs or technical societies. And they are highly active. We have around 67 fests round the year so you will not have time to relax something or the other will keep you busy.
There are 3 girls hostels(1 newly constructed having modern facilities though I doubt if ull get it in 1st yr itself). Also safety for girls is ensured. So dont worry about safety. For mess I am speechless;p.
As for NIT Jamshedpur, I dont know much so I wont comment on it.
In the end I suggest you to come to NIT Kurukshetra. Youll really have lots of fun. Rest is all upto you.
Wishing you all the best!!

I have done Computer Engineering from NIT Kurukshetra(20062010 batch).
Most of the courses for CS and IT were similar and also taught by same professors.
Placements are 200%(Do check latest numbers) (200% coz each student generally gets 2 jobs by the end of curriculum) .
Hostel life was very cool , and the NIT KKR gives you best mess food because it is in Haryana.
Extra curricular activities used to be a lot more during our times but now the director wants students to focus more on studies and technical aspects.
There are 2 major Fests - Confluence(Cultural) and Literati(Technical)
I have seen and organized both and it is fun.
One added advantage over Jamshedpur is that it is near Delhi/Gurgaon so calling companies for placements is easier compared to Jamshedpur. Life outside NIT is not much as it only has one mall(Kessel mall) with a multiplex (cheap tickets compared to Delhi/Bangalore) .
