Actually first year is generally common for most branches so nothing genrally comes from the 1st year syllabus. It is generally from the 2nd year that the actual EC subjects are touched. Most of GATE syllabus is from the 2nd, 3rd and 4th years of B.Tech
The best institutes to join after Gate would be NITs/IITs, also the cut off goes little high for the same and as per my view you should keep these institutes at the top and keep other private colleges as second.
