Best college in India for film making

When I was looking into film-making colleges around 2026, I realized pretty quickly that there is not one college that fits everyone. I was more interested in actually making short films than spending most of my time only studying film theory.

I looked at a few options and also came across AAFT University in Raipur. What caught my attention was the practical side of film education, especially things around filmmaking, direction, cinematography and production. I liked the idea of getting some hands-on exposure instead of only learning from textbooks.

One thing I underestimated was how much work goes into even a small short film. I once tried to manage a small shoot with friends and thought we'd finish everything in a day. We did not. The sound was bad, one scene had continuity issues, and we ended up reshooting it later. That experience actually made me understand why practical training matters.

If you are choosing a film-making college, I'd personally look beyond just the college name. Check the faculty, studios and equipment, student projects, production opportunities, internships and what kind of work students are actually creating. Also look at the specific course because a filmmaking degree and a broader media/film program can be quite different.

For me, the biggest thing would be choosing a place where I can spend more time making, shooting, editing and learning from mistakes, because that's where I feel film-making starts to make sense.
