Currently pursuing CSE at a low-tier IIIT but not particularly interested in coding. I may get B.Arch, Civil, and B.Pharm at Jadavpur University this year. I'm leaning towards B.Arch because of possible MBA diversity benefits and the flexibility to prepare for CAT. Would switching be a smart move ?
Hello Dear Student,
Low-Tier IIIT CSE vs Jadavpur University B.Arch (for MBA Aspirants)
If your primary goal is to pursue an MBA later, switching from CSE at a lower-tier IIIT to B.Arch at Jadavpur University solely for academic diversity is generally not the best strategy.
B.Arch and MBA Preparation
- B.Arch is a 5-year program with intensive studio work, design projects, juries, and submissions.
- The workload is often heavier and more continuous than many engineering programs.
- While B.Arch graduates may receive academic diversity benefits during MBA admissions, maintaining a strong academic record can be challenging due to the demanding curriculum.
Civil Engineering at Jadavpur University
- Offers the strong brand value of Jadavpur University.
- Generally provides more flexibility for CAT preparation compared to Architecture.
- Can still contribute to academic diversity at some business schools.
B.Pharm at Jadavpur University
- Specialized and content-heavy.
- Suitable if you have genuine interest in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, or life sciences.
- Less ideal if your only objective is MBA preparation.
CSE at a Lower-Tier IIIT
- Retains access to software and technology careers.
- Provides a strong fallback option if MBA plans change.
- Engineering students regularly secure admissions to top MBA programs through excellent CAT scores, academics, internships, and work experience.
Recommendation
- Choose B.Arch only if you are genuinely interested in architecture and design.
- If your goal is simply to maximize MBA prospects, the diversity advantage alone is usually not enough to justify moving into a demanding 5-year architecture program.
- Between the options mentioned, Civil Engineering at Jadavpur University is often a more balanced choice than B.Arch for someone targeting CAT and an MBA.
- If you enjoy coding and technology, staying in CSE can still be a very strong route to top MBA programs.
The best degree for MBA preparation is usually the one in which you can maintain a high CGPA, build a strong profile, and perform exceptionally in CAT , rather than choosing a course purely for diversity points.
Hope it helps!
