For admission into best engineering institutes of India,you need to clear the national level exam like JEE mains and JEE advanced.

For admission into private institutes, you have to give their separate entrance exams, for example VIT, SRM,etc.

To get admission in engineering college, you need to appear for IIT-JEE. You have to mandatorily appear for JEE prelims and based on your cut off, you will get to appear for JEE mains.

However, there are certain colleges which have their own entrance examinations. For admission in them, you need to appear for them accordingly.

The most prominent examination for admissions to engineering colleges in India is JEE. If you get a good score in JEE-Mains, you can get admissions in Nits, GFITs, and IIITs. If you want admissions to IITs, you need to clear Mains and get a very high rank in JEE-Advanced. Each state also has its own entrance test for local colleges. Other top colleges like MIT, VIT, BITS etc. also conduct their own entrance tests.
