How many MBBS and BDS seats available in India for the year 2018-19?
Answer (1)
Hello Sripal,
The answer to this question is not exact as the data provided by the Medical Council of India and other Government sources regarding the number of medical seats in India is conflicting and unreliable. For example, while the MCI data states that there are a total of 60,845 MBBS seats in the country (including AIIMS and JIPMER), NEET 2017 data given by the CBSE stated that candidates could apply to 65,170 MBBS seats through NEET (not including AIIMS and JIPMER). However, as MCI is considered to the final authority on medical admissions, I can give you the data presented by it regarding the number of Government MBBS seats and hopefully that will be helpful for you to get an approximate idea. According to the MCI, there are a total of 30,880 Government MBBS seats in the country (this includes outdated figures for AIIMS and JIPMER. These institutes of national importance which lie outside the purview of NEET actually offer a total of 900 seats to Indian residents). So going purely by MCI data, and excluding the current-day seat totals of AIIMS and JIPMER, NEET can be said to offer admissions to around 29,000 to 30,000 seats in MBBS courses in Government colleges (including All India Quota and State Quota seats) across the country. The actual figure for NEET 2018 may vary quite a bit from this as presently debarred medical colleges might regain approvals or colleges may increase their intakes.
