I have completed my graduation in 2022. Can i get into IIMs with two year gap. But i'm not confident about my CAT exam. What other examinations can i target which is less difficult compared to CAT. Is 4-5 months sufficient for CMAT?
Hello Pritam,
Yes, you can still target IIMs even with a two-year gap post-graduation, as they consider diverse profiles and experiences. A gap isn't necessarily a disadvantage if you can account for it in interviews or your application. If you're not confident about CAT , there are other entrance exams that you can consider, which are generally considered less intense:
-
CMAT (Common Management Admission Test)
: Accepted by several top B-schools in India, including some Tier-1 institutes.
-
MAT (Management Aptitude Test)
: Conducted four times a year, MAT is accepted by many B-schools across India.
-
SNAP (Symbiosis National Aptitude Test)
: Required for admission to Symbiosis International University and its institutes.
-
NMAT (NMIMS Management Aptitude Test)
: Accepted by NMIMS and other reputed B-schools in India.
Is 4-5 Months Sufficient for CMAT?
Yes,
4-5 months
is generally sufficient to prepare for CMAT, especially if you focus on building a solid understanding of the core topics like
Quantitative Techniques, Logical Reasoning, Language Comprehension, and General Awareness
. CMAT is more straightforward than CAT, with a balanced structure and questions at a moderate difficulty level, making it manageable with dedicated study.
Preparation Tips for CMAT in 4-5 Months:
-
Focus on Quantitative Techniques and Logical Reasoning
: Since these sections make up a large part of CMAT, consistent practice will boost accuracy.
-
Strengthen General Awareness
: Make reading current affairs a daily habit. Focus on business, politics, sports, and general knowledge.
-
Enhance Language Skills
: For Language Comprehension, practice reading comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar.
- Take Mocks Regularly : Mock tests will help you gauge your speed, improve accuracy, and familiarize you with the CMAT format.
This preparation will also benefit you if you decide to take other exams like
MAT
or
SNAP
, as many skills overlap across these exams.

Hello,
Yes, you can also join IIMs two years after graduation, depending upon the justification in interviews and your performance in entrance exams. If you are not sure about CAT, try those other management exams less hard:
Common Management Admission Test: Easier than CAT; 4-5 months of continuous preparation will suffice.
MAT : Much easier and takes place thrice a year.
SNAP (Symbiosis National Aptitude Test): A bit easier than CAT, apt for Symbiosis Institutes.
Xavier Aptitude Test or XAT : Hence, easier than CAT but the unique decision-making section.
Use exams like CMAT and MAT as a challenge to be competitively prepared. This can be given about 4-5 months, along with a few rounds of mock tests and smart studying.
