iit advance has only 3 subjects so if you want to give improvement you have to give all of them together again in the next year.

 It is pertinent to score 75% marks in your class XII and then clear the JEE Main entrance exam and then the JEE Advanced. If you clear the JEE Advanced exam, then only will you be eligible for admission to the IIT. 

Marks do not matter what matters is your rank and depending upon your rank you can definitely get a seat in civil  and mechanical both of many iits though they may be newer one's although iit is always an iit you also stand a chance in older iits but there
