what is the requirement to study for climatology or meteorolgy in india
Hello,
To pursue your dream UG program in the department of Geography, plans should be made as soon as you complete your 10th standard. Proper attention should be paid while choosing streams right after your 10th standard. One should choose streams that offer Physics and Chemistry as major subjects.
Climatologist:
The job nature of a climatologist is predicting weather, notifying the authorities on upcoming natural disasters etc. To become a climatologist one should do their B.Tech in Atmospheric Science. The basic eligibility criteria to study in this field is to have scored 60% aggregate scores in 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Maths as their major subjects. SC/ST students have a relaxation of 5% in the aggregated score. The student should crack and secure good scores in JEE main and JEE Advanced to get admitted into some top institutions that offer atmospheric science.

Meteorologist:
Meteorologist is someone who studies about the upper atmosphere. Meteorology comes under the subtypes of Climatology. So, those two are not different from each other. Student who wished to do Meteorology should be strong enough in the basic concepts of Mathematics and Physics even from their SSLC board. There are some colleges that offer Meteorology as one of the degrees in B.Sc and in B.Tech. Some of the institutes which provide B.Sc in Meteorology are given below:
- St. Peter's Engineering College, Chennai, Tamil Nadu
- A.B.V. Government Degree College, Warangal, Andhra Pradesh
- Shivaji University, Kolhapur, Maharashtra.
- Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology Pune.
- Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences Uttarakhand.
I conclude by mentioning that one should have enough knowledge in basic maths and science and should have developed a good problem solving capability in order to become a successful Climatologist or Meteorologist.
Hope that helps, Thanks
