Can i get to know how ignou works?
HELLO SANJANA
THANKS FOR ASKING
IGNOU is the largest distance University having the maximum number of students in the world.
The headquarter is situated in New Delhi. There is a Regional Centre in each State & study centres in most
of the cities.
When a student is enrolled in IGNOU, the student chooses a Regional Centre and a Study Centre. The
books will be received from the selected study centre.
Any direct communication with the university is done through the study centre or in some occasions the
students may have to visit the Regional Centre. In very rare cases the student visits the Headquarters
For admission the student have to apply online through the website. There are two sessions for admission
(January session & July session).A student can take admission in any one of the sessions. In most of the
programmes (course) there is no admission test.
The details of any course, eligibility criteria & fee details can be found in the official website of IGNOU.
After the admission,
The students have to go to the selected study centre from where the books will be provided.
Suppose you are taking admission in July session then you may visit the study centre in August &
ask for the books in Office. They will provide you the books and also tell you the date of first class
for the 1st semester. Usually it begins in August last week or September 1st week (for July
session).
In case of January session the books can be collected in February & class will begin most probably
in March 1st week.
The students need to prepare assignments those will be submitted & evaluated in the study centre
only. Then carry weightage of 25%.
The assignment questions will be uploaded in the University website in September (for July
session) & in March (for January session).
Take guidelines for preparing assignments from the study centre.
The term end examinations (carrying 75% weightage) are conducted twice a year. In June & in
December.
The exam routines are published in the website few months before the exams.
The examination in IGNOU is very punctual & not under any circumstances the exam will be
cancelled no matter if there is an earthquake or tsunami or some riots.
The results are usually out after 1.5 - 2 months of exams. The exact date of publishing of results is
never certain.
For attendance:
70% attendance in practical classes is compulsory (if you are enrolled in a course which have
practical classes provided), otherwise attendance in theory classes is not compulsory, although
you should attend most of the class.
IGNOU is a place where you will find different kinds of students belonging to different
backgrounds and age-groups because its an Open University, the same applies to the Lecturers
also. Some teachers are good, some are extraordinary but some are not that so good. You just
have to make friends & stay connected with the right kind of persons here.
In the Term End Examination, you are only allowed to give exams for those papers for which you
have submitted the assignments.
Before the exams, you have to fill online examination form in which you have to select the exam
centre (you can give exam in any centre in any city no matter where is your study centre) , you
have to pay the exam fees which is currently ₹150/ paper.
For those papers in which you are fail (you have backlog) you can reapply again & again till your
admission validity expires which is 6 years in most cases.
As soon as you are pass in all the papers including all assignments you will receive your
provisional certificate, marksheet in your home through speed post/ courier within 15 days.
The original passing certificate is given in the convocation each year in the month of April for
which you have to apply online, under no circumstances the university will send you original
passing certificate if you haven't applied for the convocation. The convocation is held in New
Delhi.
But don't worry you don't have to go there, just apply for the convocation after you have
completed all papers and there is an option given online if you are not willing to go there and
want to receive the certificate through post (just tick the option) , they will send it to you after
within 1 months of the convocation.
The certificate of IGNOU is valid throughout in India & Abroad. You will face no difficulties in
public sector jobs although you may be questioned by interviewers when applying in any private
sector companies.
HOPE IT HELPS
ALL THE BEST
