Not everyone wants a four-year BTech, and not everyone can afford one. If you like computers and want to get into AI without spending years or lakhs, a Diploma in AI and ML is a smart place to start.

There is one thing most students get wrong. They call it a short course after 12th, but it is mostly a three-year polytechnic diploma after 10th, approved by AICTE. This article explains both routes, plus eligibility, fees, colleges, and career scope.
| Details | Info |
|---|---|
Full name | Diploma in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning |
Duration | 3 years (regular), 2 years (lateral entry) |
Level | Polytechnic diploma, after 10th |
Admission | State polytechnic entrance (POLYCET), counselling or 10th marks |
Total fees | About Rs. 12,000 to Rs. 45,000 at government polytechnics, Rs. 75,000 to Rs. 2 lakh at many private colleges |
Best for | Students who want a practical, low-cost start in AI |
There are three routes, and which one you take depends on where you are right now.
| Route | Who Can Apply | Duration |
|---|---|---|
After 10th (regular) | Class 10 pass, usually 35 per cent to 50 per cent marks | 3 years |
After 12th / ITI (lateral entry) | 12th with subjects like Physics, Maths, Chemistry or Computer Science, or 10th plus 2-year ITI | 2 years (direct to 2nd year) |
Short or PG diploma | 12th or graduation, offered by private institutes | 6 months to 2 years |
Some colleges ask for at least 35 per cent marks in Class 10, while others ask for 50 per cent (45 per cent for SC/ST).
Tamil Nadu's polytechnic page lists lateral entry into the second year for 12th pass students with approved subjects or ITI holders.
A Maharashtra college requires Maharashtra domicile for admission, so check state rules.
Always check the exact rules in your state, since they change from one board to another.
POLYCET: Many southern states, such as Andhra Pradesh, use their own POLYCET for polytechnic admission.
Centralized counselling (CAP): Maharashtra uses this for first-year seats.
State DOTE counselling: Tamil Nadu admits through its directorate of technical education.
Spot rounds: Some colleges also offer spot admission without the entrance test.
Check your state's technical education board website for dates and forms.
Diploma in AI and ML fees can look very different from one college to another, and your category can change the number too. The government polytechnic fees for diploma engineering are roughly Rs. 12,000 to Rs. 45,000 for the full three years. Private colleges charge more, as seen below.
Colleges | Total Fees (approx.) |
|---|---|
Swarnandhra College of Engineering and Technology, Narsapur | Rs. 75,000 |
Amrita Sai Institute of Science and Technology, Krishna | Rs. 75,000 |
Sahakar Maharshi Shankarrao Mohite Patil Institute, Solapur | Rs. 1.29 lakh |
VEMU Institute of Technology, Chittoor | Rs. 1.35 lakh |
Yashodeep Knowledge Hub, Aurangabad | Rs. 1.35 lakh |
Sheth Shri Otarmal Sheshmal Parmar College, Roha | Rs. 1.49 lakh |
Guru Gobind Singh Polytechnic, Nashik | Rs. 1.83 lakh |
Adarsh Institute of Technology and Research Centre, Vita | Rs. 1.86 lakh |
Fees are as listed by colleges for the general category and may change.
One tip: some colleges list much lower fees for SC, ST, and other reserved categories. At a few Maharashtra colleges, the SC/ST fee is a small fraction of the general fee. Always check your own category's fee.
You will find this course mainly in AICTE-approved polytechnics and engineering colleges in states like Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana. Examples include Thiagarajar Polytechnic College in Salem, Swarnandhra College in Narsapur, and Guru Gobind Singh Polytechnic in Nashik.
To compare more options, see list of diploma engineering colleges. Picking the right college takes a little homework. Before you pick a college, run through this quick checklist:
Approval: Make sure AICTE has approved the college and your state board recognises it.
Fees: Start with government and aided colleges. They are usually the most affordable.
Labs and support: See what the labs look like, whether you will practise on Python and ML tools, and if the college helps you find an internship.
Placements: Ask where diploma students ended up. BTech placement numbers often tell a different story.
Year 1: You begin with the basics, which are maths, simple programming and how computers work.
Year 2: You move on to Python, databases, data handling and statistics.
Year 3: You study machine learning, deep learning basics and AI tools, then finish with projects and an internship.
Most of your time goes into hands-on practice, and that is where a diploma really shines.
A diploma gives you an entry point, not the top of the ladder. Common roles include:
| Job Role | What You Do |
|---|---|
Junior ML / AI Technician | Support teams that build and test models |
Data Assistant / Data Annotator | Clean and label data for AI projects |
Junior Python Developer | Write basic scripts and tools |
IT / Automation Support | Run and maintain automated systems |
Entry salaries for diploma holders are usually lower than for BTech graduates and depend on your skills and location. If you want more growth, the best next step is usually lateral entry into BTech.
| Point | Diploma | BTech |
|---|---|---|
Duration | 3 years (2 via lateral entry) | 4 years |
Cost | Lower | Higher |
Entry | After 10th | After 12th |
Job level | Technician / junior roles | Engineer roles |
Growth | Needs extra study | Wider options |
If you want to compare further, read about BTech in Artificial Intelligence and other AI courses after 12th.
It is mostly a 3-year course after 10th. Many people describe it as a short course after 12th. Check the type before you apply.
Lateral entry is a big advantage. After 12th or ITI, you can often join in the second year and finish in two years. Many states also allow diploma holders to join BTech in the second year, so ask about it early.
Approval matters. A diploma from a non-approved institute may not be accepted for jobs or further study.
Domicile and category rules apply. Some seats are only for state students, and reserved category fees can be much lower.
Skills beat the certificate. Build Python and SQL skills, do small projects, and try an internship.
Beware of "guaranteed job" ads. Ask for real placement data for diploma students.
A Diploma in AI and ML gets you there with practical training at affordable fees. Pick the route that fits you (after 10th, or lateral entry after 12th), choose an approved college, and focus on real skills. Want to grow after your diploma? You can often join BTech directly in the second year through lateral entry.
