Hey,
IIMs do look for an epic track record of the students. CAT is one of the greatest filter for the old IIMs to filter out the best minds. The the AWT(Arithmetic Written Test)- WAT (Written Aptitude Test)- GD(Group Discussion) & a PI (Personal Interview) which actually makes IIMs choose the best from the best.
IIMs, especially the old ones, are India's premium institutes because of their great quality of education, faculty and infrastructure. The results are clearly seen from the students graduating from those colleges.
So if they are making brilliant managers, they require the best minds of India, hence the CAT which is a race against time and packed with negative marking scheme and tests endurance, accuracy and focus. So CAT becomes a major filter for IIMs to filter out the best minds and then filtering them even more by WAT/GD-PI process before admission.
If you are in your Final year of graduation I would suggest start prepare for CAT and try to crack. If you plan to get any work experience, even then give CAT attempt in you final just to understand how the examination works and all the formalities too.

Remember one thing, The logic is more about beating the game instead of winning the game. I mean, it's not about how many questions you attempt but it's about how many you let go cause you know the answer You got might be incorrect. The ability to let go of few questions is one of the major winning tricks in a examination like CAT which is a race against time and packed with negative marking scheme.
Hope this helps.
All the best!

Hi richa, since you are pursuing your graduation, you must be in the final year atleast to give CAT exam. Now admissions in IIMs is a very tricky business. There are two types of IIMS, THE OLD ones - IIM A, B, K, L, I and the new and baby IIMS. If you want to be eligible for the older IIMs you need to score at least 99.5 percentile if you are an average person with average academic scores and engineering field. Even then you might not get IIM A call. It all depends on their preferences that year. To be eligible for newer IIMs you need to get atleast 95 percentile and sectional 80+ to clear the minimum admission criteria. After getting a call, it all depends on you. How you perform in your interview and group discussion will determine if you finally enter an IIM. Hope this helps
