Sugar Technology is a course which is offered by a lot of institutes in our country. The students can do undergraduate degrees, postgraduate degrees and also research on this subject. This subject covers the theoretical and practical knowledge about techniques regarding sugar manufacturing, it’s processing, storing, work with the by-products of sugarcane to produce fuel, and so on.
The main objective of Sugar Technology is to teach students in a scientific way to help them learn about the subject and make them ready for their respective career field. There are also areas to learn about the wastage of sugar, by-products as well as reduce losses of fuel made from ethanol to reduce the production cost and increase the overall efficiency of the firm.
The eligibility criteria to get admission to the Sugar Technology course are similar to most of the UG and PG courses. Students must have the eligibility criteria to take those state-level or all India based exams.
For Undergraduate courses
Students need to pass their 10+2 exam from a recognized board in India.
The student must have a minimum of 50 per cent marks in their 10+2 standard on aggregate to be eligible for admission in UG course.
For Postgraduate courses
Students willing to get admission in the PG Courses (either M.Sc or Postgraduate Diploma), Must pass the undergraduate exam from a recognized university with good marks. Some institutes prefer a graduation degree in Agriculture.
Like other courses, students need to qualify in a certain eligibility test to get admission into different institutes.
For Undergraduate courses
NSI Admission Test- National Sugar Institute conducts NSI admission test for all the eligible candidates. Entrance exam is conducted to screen the candidates for the various post-graduate/diploma and certificate courses in Food Science and Technology. NSI admission test is conducted in a pen-paper based mode (Offline mode) for a duration of three hours.
JEE Main (Joint Entrance Exam Main) - Just Like other engineering courses, students all over India can get admission to various institutes for the Sugar Technology through JEE Main ranking. After that, some universities may conduct personal interviews. Only IITs consider the ranking of the JEE Advanced exam.
State-level exam- There are some state exams through which students get admission in the Sugar Technology course. Rankings in such exams will allow them to select their college accordingly. State-level exams like PU-CET (Punjab University Common Entrance Test), MH CET (Maharashtra Common Entrance Test) are such entrance exams.
For Postgraduate Courses
Post Graduate Diploma Course of Associateship of National Sugar Institute (Kanpur) in Sugar Technology: Eligible Graduates may write the selection test to get admission in the institute.
Vasantdada sugar institute (Pune), the entrance exam: This institute offers PG Diploma courses in Sugar Technology and Sugar Instrumentation Technology. They also offer a Sugar Engineering Diploma. To get admission into such institutes, students need to take the admission test followed by a personal interview.
University of Mysore entrance exam for M.Sc in Sugar Technology: This institute takes eligible candidates through the evaluation of their selection test.
Gulbarga University Entrance Test: Gulbarga University also takes an entrance test to take students in the two-year M.Sc course in Sugar Technology.
The demand for sugar and its by-products in the market of our country, along with all over the world is always high. However, the decrease in conventional energy sources is haunting us to find non-conventional energy.
Ethanol is such a fuel produced from the sugar firms as a by-product, which can be used as a source of energy.
Therefore, in countries like the USA, China, Brazil, South Africa, and some of the Asian countries are leaning towards the biofuel sources. Hence, the market is in high demand for Sugar Technology. India is not too far away. Therefore, demand in India with regards to the job opportunities available is high enough.

Course subjects in the curriculum (UG and PG Courses) of Sugar Technology are as follows:
Organic and Physical Chemistry
Organic and Physical Chemistry
Biochemistry and Sugar Chemistry
Sugar Cane Agriculture and Statistics
Instrumentation & Computer awareness
Equipment Design and Drawing (Practical)
Plant Training Report
Assignment/Study Tour Report/Seminar
Our country has mostly an agriculture-based economy. For which, agriculture is one of the major pillars of our system. Not only the production of sugar and subsidiary products but also considering the crisis of conventional fuels and the invention of biofuel in the form of ethanol is an important way to save the energy-dependent world.
This is highly in demand more than the agriculture thing with the help of sugar and alcohol technology, and hence the demand to study this particular course is growing faster.
Brewing Process Engineer
Brewing and Process Engineer used to provide technical support as they have sound technical knowledge. They are also experts in all the functions related to the brewery. Brewing and process engineer helps to set up the entire process, design and install all the necessary components in the factory.
Brewing engineers bring their engineering expertise on the table to produce high-speed manufacturing, packaging, maintaining as well as rectifying errors to perform fast action production.
The Boiler Operator observes and maintains the entire heating system and takes care of the engine, boiler, heating room, and many more things. Boiler Operators are experts in handling different types of boilers such as both high and low-pressure boilers, hot and steam boilers, hot water systems, and many more things.
They help to improve the efficiency of the sugar cane industry. With the help of learning and implementing new technologies, they maintain the entire development of the sugar industry.
All the work performed related to production is done under the supervision of the Production Engineer. Production engineers can be either from Electrical or Mechanical background.
They used to organize tasks that keep the production smooth. If any problem occurs in the system, they take care to eliminate the cause.
Students will get hired with good packages after the successful completion of the course. Such organizations are as follows:
● Shaw Wallace
● Patra and Uttam Sugar Mills
● United Spirits
● A.B. Sugar Pvt. Ltd
● Daurala Sugar Mills
● Rana Sugar Mills
● SABMiller India
● Pernod Ricard
● Symboili Sugar Works
Aspirants should have good knowledge in both biology and chemistry
Students should have an interest in the sugar and alcohol industry to do well during their undergraduate degree.
Most of the subjects taught here are very detailed and specific. Patience is a necessary skill for any student.
Students who are keen to pursue higher studies or any kind of research can surely apply for this course. During their higher studies, they will get enough knowledge and also get habituated with the subject with ease.
UG program for Sugar Technology- The program is a 4 years long degree just like B.Tech. The curriculum is semester based and has a total of 8 semesters (2 semesters in every year and each semester has a duration of 6 months).
PG program for Sugar Technology- The duration of the PG program/ Master Degree for this course is different for the different institutes. In some institutes, M.Sc degree is 2 years long, whereas some universities make it two and a half years. PG Diploma is usually one and a half years. Both M.Sc and PG Diploma are semester based, and each semester is 6 months long.
