Every app you use runs on data. Someone has to collect it, clean it, store it and feed it to AI models. That job is data engineering, and BTech AI and Data Engineering is a degree built for it.

BTech in AI and Data Engineering is a 4-year full-time undergraduate engineering programme that mixes artificial intelligence, machine learning and big data systems in one course. A regular BTech in CSE teaches you a bit of everything. This AI and Data Engineering course goes deeper into data pipelines, databases, cloud and AI models from the start.
The course name is still new, so many students get confused. Not many colleges offer it under this exact name, and a few use names like AI and Data Science. We explain the difference later in this article.
Particulars | Details |
|---|---|
Course level | Undergraduate (UG) |
Duration | 4 years (8 semesters) |
Mode | Full time, on campus |
Eligibility | 10+2 with Physics, Maths and one more subject |
Admission | JEE Main, JEE Advanced, or university entrance/merit |
Total fees | Roughly Rs. 7 lakh to Rs. 16 lakh (varies by college) |
Top job roles | Data Engineer, ML Engineer, AI Engineer, Big Data Developer |
The BTech AI and Data Engineering eligibility is simple, but it changes with the type of college.
Pass Class 12 (10+2) with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
The third subject is usually Chemistry, Computer Science, Biology, Biotechnology or a technical vocational subject.
Most colleges want a minimum of 45 per cent to 60 per cent in the main subjects (relaxation for reserved categories).
You need a valid score in the entrance exam the college accepts.
Which entrance exam should you give for admission in BTech AI and Data Engineering?
Tip: If you have Class 12 Maths but no Chemistry, check each college’s eligibility for BTech in AI and Data Engineering. Some accept Computer Science in place of Chemistry; others don’t. Do not assume.
Register for the exam (JEE Main, JEE Advanced or the college test).
Appear and get a rank. For IITs and NITs, go through JoSAA/CSAB counselling and choose this branch in your choice list.
Fill the college application if you are applying to a private university.
Upload documents, accept the seat and pay the first-year fee.

Diploma (17 Specializations), B.Tech / B.Tech (Hons.) / IE-B.Tech - 4 years - 25+ specializations | M. Tech - 14+ specializations | Highest CTC – 60 LPA
For IITs and NITs, put BTech AI and Data Engineering high in your JoSAA list if you want it. Closing ranks for newer AI branches can be close to CSE, so check last year’s cutoffs on the college pages.
BTech AI and Data Engineering fees depend mostly on the type of college. Based on figures listed for the programme, here is a rough idea:
College | Approx. total fees (4 years) |
|---|---|
About Rs. 7 lakh | |
About Rs. 11 lakh | |
About Rs. 16 lakh |
Fees change every year. Always check the official college website before you pay.
What the fee list doesn’t tell you:
Hostel and mess charges can add Rs. 1 to 1.5 lakh per year in many colleges.
Laptop, cloud credits and certification costs are extra.
IITs and NITs offer fee waivers and scholarships for eligible students, which can cut your cost a lot.
The syllabus keeps programming and maths in the first year, then moves to data and AI subjects. Subjects vary by college, but this is a typical plan:
Year | Subjects you can expect |
|---|---|
Year 1 | Engineering Maths, Physics, Programming in Python/C, Data Structures, Basic Electronics |
Year 2 | Algorithms, Database Management Systems, Probability and Statistics, Operating Systems, Computer Networks |
Year 3 | Machine Learning, Data Warehousing, Big Data Technologies (Hadoop, Spark), Cloud Computing, Deep Learning |
Year 4 | Natural Language Processing, MLOps, Data Pipelines, Electives, Internship, Major Project |
Skills you will build:
Writing Python and SQL code
Building ETL pipelines that move data from one system to another
Working on cloud platforms like AWS, Azure or Google Cloud
Training and deploying machine learning models

Here are the BTech AI and Data Engineering colleges that offer the programme under this name:
College | Admission route | Type |
|---|---|---|
IIT Ropar | JEE Advanced (JoSAA) | Government |
MNIT Jaipur | JEE Main (CSAB/JoSAA) | Government |
LPU, Jalandhar | LPUNEST / CUET / 10+2 merit | Private |
If you do not get these, look at similar courses. Many colleges teach almost the same syllabus under the name BTech in AI and Data Science. You can compare fees and seats for those on Careers360 pages such as Dr. KN Modi University and Rajalakshmi Engineering College. Fees for these start from around Rs. 2 lakh at some state-affiliated colleges and go higher at private universities.
This is the question students search the most and the one most articles skip.
| Point | AI and Data Engineering | AI and Data Science | CSE |
|---|---|---|---|
Main focus | Building data systems and pipelines | Analysing data, building models | General computing |
Heavy on | Databases, cloud, big data tools | Statistics, ML models | Programming, systems |
Best for | Students who like building systems | Students who like maths and insights | Students who want flexibility |
Simple way to choose: pick Data Engineering if you enjoy making things work behind the scenes. Pick Data Science if you enjoy finding patterns. Pick CSE if you are not sure yet. See our guide on BTech AI vs BTech CSE for a deeper comparison.
The scope of BTech AI and Data Engineering is strong because every company that uses AI needs clean, well-organised data first. Common job roles:
Data Engineer
Machine Learning Engineer
AI Engineer
Big Data Developer
Cloud Data Architect
Analytics Engineer
Where you can work: IT services firms, product companies, banks, e-commerce, healthcare, telecom and startups.
Higher studies: you can go for MTech in AI/Data Science, MS abroad, or an MBA in business analytics. Check GATE if you plan an MTech from an IIT or NIT.
Salaries depend heavily on your college, skills and internships, so do not trust any single number you see online. Check the placement report of the exact college on its Careers360 page.
Is the BTech AI and Data Engineering programme AICTE-approved?
How many seats and how many batches have passed out? A new branch may have no placement record yet.
Does the college have labs for cloud and big data, or is it only theory?
Do students get industry internships by the 3rd year, or is it just a promise on the brochure?
Who actually takes the core classes, the college’s own faculty or guest lecturers who visit once a month?
If you enjoy coding and maths, and you like the idea of building the systems that AI runs on, BTech AI and Data Engineering is worth a serious look. Companies find it hard to hire people who understand both AI and data, and this course trains you for exactly that mix.
Your first step is the entrance exam. Aiming for an IIT or NIT means preparing for JEE Main and JEE Advanced. It also helps to keep a few private universities on your list as a backup. When you compare colleges, look at the syllabus, the labs and the placement record. Don’t choose the college name or the fee alone.

Hi,
Yes, you can still join BE/BTech through KCET counselling. Since you officially discontinued your B.Sc Agriculture seat, submitted the discontinuation letter, and got your TC/documents back without penalty, you are generally eligible to participate in KCET counselling again.
KEA mainly creates issues when students block seats and do not
If you're specifically looking for B.E./ B. Tech in Aerospace Engineering (not Aeronautical Engineering) , it's worth considering LPU as well. Aerospace Engineering is a broader field that covers the design, development, testing, and maintenance of both aircraft and spacecraft , including satellites, rockets, and space exploration systems, whereas Aeronautical
