You finished Class 12 and now two names keep popping up: BTech AI and BTech Generative AI. They sound almost the same. So which one should you pick?
This Story also Contains
Short answer: both are good, but they are not the same thing. This article compares the BTech AI vs BTech Generative AI options on eligibility, fees, colleges, BTech AI salary and career scope, so you can decide without confusion.
BTech in Artificial Intelligence is a full AI degree. It covers machine learning, deep learning, robotics and data mining. BTech Generative AI is usually a specialisation inside BTech Computer Science. It goes deeper into large language models (LLMs), chatbots and tools that create text, images and code.
Particulars | BTech AI | BTech Generative AI |
|---|---|---|
Duration | 4 years | 4 years |
Type | Full AI degree | Usually a CSE specialisation |
Focus | ML, deep learning, robotics, data | LLMs, NLP, prompt engineering, AI apps |
Colleges | 300+ colleges | Fewer, mostly private universities |
Total fees | About Rs. 98,000 to Rs. 20 lakh | About Rs. 8 lakh to Rs. 20 lakh (private) |
Best for | Wide AI career options | Building and working with GenAI tools |
The rules are almost the same for both.
BTech AI starts with the basics: programming, maths, data structures and statistics. Later you learn machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, reinforcement learning and robotics.
The generative AI route has the same foundation. The difference comes in the later years, when you spend more time on LLMs, prompt engineering, AI app building and responsible AI use. Think of it this way: AI is the full toolbox, and generative AI is one very popular tool in it.
Fees change a lot between government and private colleges. The fees listed below are for the BTech AI course and may change.
College | Total Fees |
|---|---|
Rs. 19.64 Lakhs | |
Rs. 8.32 Lakhs | |
Rs. 5.78 Lakhs | |
Rs. 5.19 Lakhs | |
Rs. 3.08 Lakhs |
This course is newer, so the list is shorter. Most seats are in private universities.
College | Course | Total Fees |
|---|---|---|
BTech CSE (Generative AI) with Microsoft tie-up | Rs. 16.00 Lakhs | |
BTech CSE with Generative AI (Hons) | Rs. 11.76 Lakhs |
Before you pay a single rupee, look at the syllabus, lab access and placement record. Fancy course names don’t mean much without them.
Both pay well, and your skills matter more than the course title. Here is the salary for various job roles.
Job Role | Average Salary (per year) |
|---|---|
Rs. 15.4 LPA | |
Rs. 14.4 LPA | |
Rs. 12.0 LPA |
These figures are for those people who already have a few years of work experience. Freshers don’t start there. In generative AI roles, most begin somewhere between Rs. 4 lakh and Rs. 8 lakh a year. Students from top colleges with strong projects often get more. Treat all of this as a rough guide, not a promise.
BTech AI opens a wider door. You can become an AI engineer, ML engineer, data scientist, data analyst or robotics engineer. Recruiters include Microsoft, Amazon, Cognizant and TCS, and some graduates go on to research roles.
BTech Generative AI points to a narrower but fast-growing set of jobs, like generative AI engineer, NLP engineer, prompt engineer and AI product associate. Banks, hospitals, media houses and e-commerce firms are all adding these tools.
Either way, you can later do an MTech if you want a research or senior path.
Honestly, there is no single winner. It depends on you.
Pick BTech AI if you want the widest job options and a strong base in maths, ML and data. It also has far more colleges, including cheaper government and state ones.
Pick BTech Generative AI if you already love working with chatbots and LLMs, and the college has proper labs and industry ties.
Not sure? Take a regular BTech in AI and ML or CSE seat and choose generative AI electives later. You keep your options open that way.

If a BTech is not your plan, our guide to generative AI courses after 12th also covers BCA and short courses. You can read about BCA too.
BTech AI and BTech Generative AI are close cousins. One is the full subject, the other is a hot slice of it. For most students, BTech AI is the safer pick because it gives a broader base and more college choices. Generative AI makes sense if you know you want that path and the college backs it up.
Whatever you choose, learn Python early, build small projects and aim for a recognised college. Those habits will matter more than the name on your degree.

You can pursue B.Tech in Robotics, Automation or Mechatronics after Class 12 with PCM. Admission depends on the university and may be through JEE Main or merit.
For example, Galgotias University offers B.Tech in Robotics and Mechatronics, so these can be good options to explore if you're interested in automation
Hi,
Yes, you can still join BE/BTech through KCET counselling. Since you officially discontinued your B.Sc Agriculture seat, submitted the discontinuation letter, and got your TC/documents back without penalty, you are generally eligible to participate in KCET counselling again.
KEA mainly creates issues when students block seats and do not
If you're specifically looking for B.E./ B. Tech in Aerospace Engineering (not Aeronautical Engineering) , it's worth considering LPU as well. Aerospace Engineering is a broader field that covers the design, development, testing, and maintenance of both aircraft and spacecraft , including satellites, rockets, and space exploration systems, whereas Aeronautical
