B.Tech in Nanotechnology: Overview
B.Tech in Nanotechnology
10+2 or equivalent from a recognized school board (Science stream is mandatory)
Entrance test/ Cut-off
Up to INR 10 lakhs
B.Tech in Nanotechnology is an emerging field of science that is expected to have rapid growth in terms of development. Nanomaterials have different physical and chemical properties than bulk because of the high surface to volume ratio and quantum effects at the nanoscale. Nanodevices are very special because of their size which makes them more valuable for all kinds of practical use. It is predicted that nanotechnology will contribute significantly in every field of development in the coming decades. B.Tech in nanotechnology is a getaway in the field of nanotechnology in which you will study structures in the range of 1-100 nanometer. Nanotechnology can be created through two processes.
Bottom-Up approach:- By this approach any materials or devices are built from the starting material molecular components that assemble themselves chemically by principles of molecular recognition.
Top-Down approach:- By this approach nanomaterials are constructed from larger entities without atomic-level control.
Applications of nanotechnology
Medicine:- Researchers are developing customized nanoparticles the size of molecules that can deliver drugs directly to diseased cells in your body. This method can reduce the chances of damage to healthy cells.
Electronics:- Using nanotechnology scientists are developing nanodevices so the size, weight, power consumption can be reduced with increasing the capabilities of the electronic devices.
Space:- With the advancements in nanomaterials scientists are developing lightweight spacecraft which can significantly reduce the fuel consumption in the rocket.
Textile:- With the help of nanoparticle coating on the textile, it can be imparted a lot of functional properties in the textile fabric based on the need of the consumer.
Filters:- Nanoparticle catalysts can be used on the filter of cars or in any industrial plants which will improve the efficiency of the filter as nanoparticles have the larger surface area.
Some of the key factors which are mandatory for a B.Tech in nanotechnology
There are some B.tech courses related to the synthesis of the nanoparticles in which you will learn different methods of nanoparticle synthesis. The basic knowledge of chemistry will help you to understand the concept easily.
Nanotechnology in an electronic device is an application of nanotechnology where you will need some basic knowledge of electronics.
You will be having a characterization technique lab also where you will learn about some characterizations techniques like DSC(Differential scanning calorimetric, XRD(x-ray diffraction), TGA (Thermogravimetric analysis), Spectroscopic Analysis (UV-Visible Spectroscopy), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Zeta Potential. Some basic knowledge of material science and chemistry will be needed for these practical classes. All these things will be taught in your theory class.
How to get admission in B. Tech in Nanotechnology?
As this is a newly emerging field in science and research, there are few colleges/universities that offer B.Tech in nanotechnology. The admission process of all the colleges is different but there are several documents that every candidate must keep ready when trying to take admission to B.Tech in nanotechnology.
Marksheets for 10th & 12th standard
Passport size photographs

Top Exams to get admission in B.tech in Nanotechnology
There are many engineering entrance exams conducted at university or national level to give admission in the top engineering colleges in India. There are some universities/colleges who provide admission on the basis of the marks in the 12th board exam. The list of top 6 engineering entrance exams is given below.
JEE Advanced - Joint Entrance Examinations (JEE) Advanced is an engineering entrance test conducted by one of the seven zonal IITs to give admission to the IITs/ISM. The students who have qualified in the jee main can appear in this exam. Also, you should have some minimum percentage in the 12th board exam to get admission in the IITs. This test is held in mid of may annually through online mode. JEE Advanced gives you two chances(One with 12th class, second after completing class 12th) to qualify and get admission in the IITs. You will have 2 papers on the same day with 2.5 hours of the gap in between. The time duration for each paper is 3 hours. This is one of the toughest exams in the world which checks the quality among the candidates.
JEE Main - Joint Entrance Examinations Main is an engineering entrance test conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA) to give admission to top tier engineering colleges (NITs) within India. This is also a qualifying exam for JEE Advanced. Students who have passed class 12th science or appear in class 12th science can apply for this exam. This exam gives you three chances(One with class 12th appearing and two chances after completing the class 12th) to qualify and get admission in the top engineering colleges in India. This test is conducted two times(One in January and second in April) every year through online mode.
VITEEE - Vellore Institute of Technology Entrance Exam is conducted by Vellore University to give admission to all the campuses of VIT for b.tech courses. This test is conducted through online mode in April every year. The time duration of this exam is 150 minutes in which you have 125 questions to solve.
BITSAT - Birla Institute of Technology and Science admission test is conducted by Birla Institute to give admission to all three campuses BITS Pilani, BITS Goa, and BITs Hyderabad for b.tech courses. This test is conducted around mid of may every year through online mode.
